Government advises “reporting adverse drug reactions”

Cabinet meeting by Downing Street on Flickr

The Prime Minister’s Office announced yesterday the MHRA‘s intention to advise prescription drug users to report adverse reactions to pharmaceutical products, in response to a petition started by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) in London, which called for ‘Black Box Warnings’ on psychotropic drugs.

According to CCHR, whose mission is ‘to expose and eradicate psychiatric violations of human rights,’ there have been 119 international warnings against psycho-pharmaceuticals since the year 2000. Continue reading

Psychiatric drugging of children “deadly”, says watchdog

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) was founded by members of the Church of Scientology, which is how I became aware of it and its mission. The following is a news article about a demonstration staged by CCHR in Liverpool…

Attendees arrived at the annual meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Liverpool yesteday, amid fierce protest from human rights watchdog the ‘Citizens Commission on Human Rights’ (CCHR), whose supporters donned black t-shirts and waved placards with photos of children who have died as a result of psychiatrist-prescribed medications or psychiatric abuse.

American teenager pleads guilty to Scientology web attack

Church of ScientologyA 19-year-old American man has admitted knocking the Church of Scientology‘s websites offline in a series of electronic attacks in 2008.

Dmitri Guzner of Verona, New Jersey pleaded guilty to charges of cybercrime against the religious organisation and related websites, which began in January 2008. The “Denial-of-Service” attacks involved using several computers to flood the websites with up to 220 Megabytes of malicious traffic every second, resulting in the websites being unavailable to legitimate visitors.

Guzner, who entered his plea at a New Jersey court on Monday 11th May, is due to be sentenced on 24th August. Some sources have suggested he may face up to 10 years in prison if handed the maximum sentence. Guzner was a member of the underground hacking group “Anonymous”, whose mostly teenage members began attacking the Scientology movement last year. In response to the initial attack, the Church of Scientology released a new information website, the “Scientology Video Channel,” which went online on 13th March to coincide with their annual celebration of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday.

Happy St. George’s Day

England flags by sk8geek on FlickrToday is St. George’s Day, the national day for England. In keeping with the theme, I’m wearing a red tie with my white shirt and I have my Union Jack (I know, it’s not the same as the St. George Cross) pin-badge on. But don’t forget, it does mean something… Continue reading

Why do people leave?

He's Walkin' AwaySometimes people just up sticks and leave, walk out. Often there is some apparent reasoning, but sometimes there isn’t, and even given those reasons, it can seem odd. It’s not just leaving an area either, people quit jobs, resign from courses, avoid particular people, and so on. An explanation for the related phenomena is only as useful as it opens the door to something that can be done about it. L. Ron Hubbard found just such an explanation, so I thought I’d share it with you… Continue reading

What’s a Scientology funeral like?

Scientology CrossDamn good question. People you know don’t die every day, so many of us are not regular attendees of funeral and memorial services. Some people choose to be cremated, some burial, but aside from that what about the sending off? Military funerals are a grand affair with dress uniforms and often gun salutes, state funerals are a national occasion, Christian funerals recognise the beginning and end of the cycle of life, and Scientologists have their own service. I just went to one, so I can tell you a bit about it.

Man is Basically Good

Crime Scene by freefotouk on FlickrHave you ever noticed whenever there’s a crime, the criminal usually leaves something behind, like an identifier or some clue or other. It’s how people get caught, the anatomy of criminology is very interesting, but there’s something it reminds me of that criminologists perhaps don’t consider. Want to know what?

Chimp Goes Looney on Psychiatric Drug Xanax

Photo by kallao on FlickrYou may have seen articles this week about a TV-star chimpanzee who was shot by police and died of his injuries, after mauling his owner’s 55-year old friend in north-eastern USA. I caught this one in the Metro yesterday but what really got me was that the chimp had got a medical disease and his owner gave him Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication. He promptly went loopy and left the 55-year old woman in a life threatening condition. What’s the significance of the drug?

Religion or Religion?

Religion by Christian et Cie on FlickrSometimes people ask me about my religion. I work at the Church of Scientology, so it does play a large part in my everyday life. I meet with members of other religions, and even religious leaders from the likes of the Anglican and Catholic churches, and other religions such as Sikhs, Bahá’is, Buddhists and so on. What I find many people don’t know is that Scientologists are not looking to “convert” people away from their current beliefs. So what is it all about?

Sporting a Win

Table Football by atomicShed on FlickrI’m not much the sporty type to be perfectly honest, and football was never amongst my schoolboy supremes (track & field was more my thing), but when it’s all for a good cause, why not? Especially when you pit Manchester against Birmingham in a sponsored footie tournament to raise money for both cities’ new Churches of Scientology. It was a good laugh!
