I’m not much the sporty type to be perfectly honest, and football was never amongst my schoolboy supremes (track & field was more my thing), but when it’s all for a good cause, why not? Especially when you pit Manchester against Birmingham in a sponsored footie tournament to raise money for both cities’ new Churches of Scientology. It was a good laugh!
The Church of Scientology of Manchester has purchased a new building in the area, but it’s going to need a lot of renovation, furniture, equipment, etc., so even though the purchase is made, there is still a fair way to go. Luckily we have some dedicated volunteers working to raise funds by various means, leaving the Church staff to continue doing their work within the Church itself. But we decided we wanted to contribute too, and our idea was to do sponsored activities which would be fun and would also raise money toward the overall goal.
Training over a few weeks went well, but I did suffer from a few strained muscles and had to put into practice what I’d learnt when studying Health Related Fitness. Out came the RICE… no, not the grain, but Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. And I must admit I was suprised when I could walk normally again in under two days. I guess it must work or something!
Sunday saw the clash between staff and parishioners of both the Manchester and Birmingham Churches of Scientology at a sports centre in Stockport and, needless to say, we scored a total of nine more goals than the West Midlands contingent, proving once again that Manchester is at the forefront of footballing prowess. However we all had tremendous fun, raised a few hundred pounds, and got the bunch together. So I’d say it was successful anyway!
And what of games anyway? Life is a game:
“Despite the amount of suffering, pain, m isery, sorrow and travail which can exist in life, the reason for existence is the same reason as one has to play a game—interest, contest, activity and possession.
“…By studying the elements of games, we find ourselves in possession of the elements of life.
“LIFE IS A GAME.”
